C1

We headed out for a leisurely breakfast this morning after having slept in. C1 Espresso had a lot good things said about it on the net, so we thought we would check it out, and we were very impressed.

We bypassed the outdoor seating as it was a little chilly out and decided to chance our luck inside although it looked pretty small. We walked in, and while the tables with old movie seats (the ones that flip back up) were very cool, we decided to skip them too. We discovered the cafe was much larger on the inside than expected, and found ourselves a cozy corner. The decor was crazy, bare brick walls on some sides, graffiti stencils of all manner of things, one wall covered in old coffee hand-grinders and the entire roof was a collage of all manner of things.

Some slightly dancey music was pumping through the speakers, loud enough to hear easily, but not so loud as to block out conversation. As we were listening, we noticed that it was in fact coming from a DJ booth within the shop and all being mixed live. And it turns out, they also broadcast it live on the fm band, with dj’s doing 2 hour shifts, and then handing over to someone else. All very cool.

We ordered from the counter, and quite impressively the waitress recognised where I had come from to order, and after double checking that was where we were sitting, just wrote it on the docket. I stopped to get some water on the way back, and this was possibly the coolest thing of all. There was a vintage sewing machine mounted to the bench, with glasses behind it. When you turned the wheell that makes the needle go up and down, it turned on a tap so water came out of the centre of the machine to fill your glass. A little confusing if you don’t know what you are doing, but wonderfully quirky.

We were told there was a half hour wait on the food, which was ok, and our coffees arrived almost immediately. the reports had been true, the coffee was fantastic. Perfect temperature, strong enough without being bitter, and the milk was lovely and smooth, complete with latte at on top of my flat white.

By the time our food arrived, we had another coffee each, it was just that good, as was the food. Chan had scrambled eggs and bacon on soda toast which was the most incredible fluffy, yet toasted bread, it was amazing. And I had eggs Benedict with wilted spinach and potato. I’ve never had Benedict before, and this was amazing, the spinach was especially lovely, and the eggs were poached perfectly.

So we think we have found what may become our regular haunt, or at least somewhere to stop for a good coffee.
