Ethical???

chan | 28/6/071 Comment

I have never been accused of being ‘too ethical’ before and I guess you could take it as an insult but I was pleased that I portrayed the qualities of a Christian enough to be seen to be ethical if not anything else.

Let me explain… after spending (wasting) a month of my life in the process of trying to get a job with the Council over here I was left wondering how on earth people managed to get jobs. Anyhow – after much sadness after not getting the job I applied for a few and from that was able to spend 3 weeks temping at an awesome job before being offered the full time job I start tomorrow (Tuesday). You can imagine my surprise when I found a message on my phone from the agency looking after the council recruiting as I was promised a call from her the week after they rejected me (a month ago). I called back to see what they wanted and was told someone had resigned from the call centre and I was next on their list and was I interested. I explained that after not hearing anything from her I had moved on and started temping work and had accepted a full time position. She was very apologetic not to have been in touch but was excited about being able to offer me a position – and then came the words “Oh – but you are too ethical to do anything like that” (that being to take their offer over the one I had already accepted) at which point i agreed and then ended the conversation.

I was gob-smacked at what to say after hanging up the phone and was torn between whether to be horrified that they would even think I would go back on my word – and being excited that in by only meeting me twice – she knew I had enough integrity to stand by my decision.

Which got me thinking -

day 2

im so tired! who would have remembered full time work could be so tiring
i managed to figure out the bus (sort of) and its pretty cool - its like having an M5 beeping thing in a credit card sized piece of plastic - when you put it on the grey box it goes “beep beep” and then takes money off my card.
i have my first meeting tomorrow so that will be interesting i think.
and friday is the montly friday night pizza and beer night. should be interesting fitting 65 people into a room the size or our old kitchen (well not exactly that small but close) and yay for catching the bus home after!!! i dont have to drive!

In a few weeks time, i will get to see Helvetica (A documentary film). Turns out it is doing a world tour of screenings, with the director Gary Hustwit doing a Q and A afterwards. So geeky, and so wonderful. (Thank you to chan for agreeing that i should go)

I will write more tomorrow as we have just got home from Bible study but here are some highlights of my first day.

- Bank style security keypad to go in and out of the bathroom

- Bring walked two blocks to office furniture store to pick out my new chair, and wheeling it back to the office.

- Being given an umbrella by the agency who got me the job.

Things to say

chan | 25/6/070 Comments

There has been a lot going on in my life and not enough blogging so I am going to attempt to write stuff down and blog about a different subject each time to that you aren’t forced to read crazy long things that don’t make sense

Obviously tomorrow will be about my first day - but tonight I think I will leave it at this and spend some time getting organized about what I will tell you all.

I am looking forward to ‚my first day although there is a little trepidation about it as the weather forecast is ‘sleeting showers’ so im not looking forward to actually leaving for work – although I shant complain – I figured out my commute time from door to door will be 7 minutes – which by my workings will be just 2 songs on my ipod. And on the way home jordan will be on my same bus – how very forrest gump.

So – heres to more blogging and more fun

Restoration

jord | 21/6/071 Comment

Disaster almost struck last night, but thanks to God, and a wonderful little program for the mac, all is well.
Jordan decided he should back up all his photos (having not done so since April) and his music. All was going well, the external hard drive was plugged in and ready. Then stupid jordan accidentally copied the old backup to where all the new photos were, in the process deleting the new photos… He realised straight away but by the time he had stopped the process the last 2 months of photos were gone. Not just in the trash, but gone…
A night of frantic searching, frantic praying and frantic stressing later, he had found a product that stated it could retrieve said photos. Once it was established it could find them, the $100 was forked over, and the photos were eventually restored. Thank you God.

(nb. we realise that they are just photos, and not the end of the world, but at the same time, they were also the main record of pretty much everything we have done since we have been over here, so it would have been devestating if they were gone).

Brrrr
