Karma
Ok, well I don’t actually believe in karma, but God sometimes has a funny sense of humour/way to teach us a lesson.
Saturday morning we were out looking for a bed for the spare room (in order to accommodate the first of our overseas visitors, em and dan) and were looking around a second-hand furniture place down the south side of the city. We were sorting through all manner of mattresses, trying to pick between size, price, whether we wanted a mattress with a base or just a frame, all important decisions. We came across a double mattress and base which caught our eye. It was a non-matching set (who cares) and was in pretty good condition and on sale for $69. A perfect fit for us.
So Chan kept her eye on it while kept searching to see if anything better was on offer (there wasn’t). As I was doing this, another lady started looking through the mattresses and bases as well, with one of the sales staff. She stopped for an extended look at the set we had our eye on, then said to the salesman, she would like to buy the base, but not the mattress. Chan mentioned that we were going to get it, and got told that “there are plenty more over there” as the woman went off to pay for her mattress base.
Well that gave us a bad enough taste in the mouth that we decided to leave, and try our hand elsewhere. But finding no luck anywhere else, we returned to the same place after church on Sunday. It seemed a shame to waste the sale.
We picked out another base and mattress and I stood guard while Chan went to get the salesman. With our new mattress secured, we continued to look at more furniture (also on sale). We found a nice sideboard/lowboy and a chest of drawers (reduced to $6) that took our fancy, so we went to get the salesman’s attention again.
While we were getting him, another young couple had come in and started looking at the furniture. As we returned with the salesman, they were having an extended, very interested, look at the bargain chest of drawers we had asked the man about. He sorted out the sideboard, and once the couple had stopped looking at the chest of drawers, removed the sale sticker from it so we could get it delivered. As he apologised to the couple and they looked a little dismayed, we had a little more perspective on the previous days events. Hmmmm.
(p.s. the furniture gets delivered on Saturday)
